Process Paper
For our History Day Project, we researched on Ferdinand Marcos. Between the years 1965 - 1989, Ferdinand Marcos becoming President was a harsh experience for the Philippines because he did not responsibly handle his presidential duties. He instead bankrupted the Philippines, declared Martial Law under Proclamation 1081, and suspended Filipino civil rights. This negatively affected the Philippines. His abuse of power led to the People Power Revolution, which forced him to give up his presidency.
We chose Ferdinand Marcos as our topic, because we are Filipinos like him, and we want to teach our culture's story to our generation, explaining how it was in the Philippines under his regime. While brainstorming our possible topics, another group chose to do a documentary and mentioned Ferdinand Marcos’ wrong-doings, so we agreed to do Ferdinand Marcos. One of our members participated in NHD last year, while the other two just joined this year. In the beginning, we used the internet. Then in the middle of our research, we borrowed books from Waipahu Public and University of Hawaii (UH) Libraries for our references. We also found a video about Ferdinand Marcos that we also borrowed from UH Manoa Library. In the videos, we tried to find the original sites where the videos were uploaded. The book, Today's Democracy by Ferdinand Marcos, was the most valuable book we borrowed, while our most valuable source was interviewing Dr. Liongson. He was part of the students protesting against Marcos. He was also one of the people who were put in jail during Martial Law. Our ideas about our topic changed as we did the research, because we found out that President Ferdinand Marcos did not do his job as a true, honest, responsible president.
The choices we made about the information to include in our entry were that Ferdinand Marcos was a harsh President. We chose to create a website because two of our members are new to History Day and we are in the English Language Learner (ELL) program. Websites seemed to be the easiest. We encountered many problems during meeting days because of our afterschool activities. We overcame this problem by meeting during morning and lunch recesses, and we extend our time after school. Another problem was having only a few sources from the internet. We overcame this problem by borrowing books from the libraries. Our topic is related to the National History Day theme because Ferdinand Marcos did not fulfill his responsibilities as a president and he took away the rights of the Filipinos. It is important to study our topic because Ferdinand Marcos had a big impact on the Philippine economy. We concluded that Ferdinand Marcos was an irresponsible President even if he did good things. The main lesson we learned from our research is that greed and power will get the best of us as leaders or even normal people. It can lead us to become negative people and we can also lose what is precious to us. Leaders are meant to be trusted but when their words and actions do not match, it is the responsibility and rights of the people to hold their leaders accountable.
