His first term of office was marked by a 'technocratic' (designating technological experts to make decisions) style of governing that concentrated on building roads, schools, hospitals, and other neglected areas of the infrastructure.

Imelda Marcos ordered the construction of this extravagant guesthouse, built of coconut wood & shells, to accommodate Pope John Paul II for his 1981 visit. Its opulence turned him off so much, he refused to stay there. Many tourists visit the Coconut Palace and say, "this here is one of the better places to visit in Manila . . . You get the story about the palace, visit every room, and find out about the handicraft from every province in Philippines."

A second major accomplishment of Ferdinand Marcos was becoming allies with President Ronald Reagan and the United States.

On September 17, 1982, Ferdinand Marcos journeyed to the United States in what President Marcos termed, "a meeting of friends." President Ronald Reagan welcomed Marcos with a full-dress military ceremony on the South Lawn of the White House. Their support for each other throughout the years allowed the United States to use the military bases in the Philippines, while Marcos benefited financially. (Youtube.com)
Another accomplishment of Ferdinand Marcos and Vice President Fernando Lopez was the defeat of the Liberal Party Ticket of Sergio Osmena, Jr. and Senator Genaro Magsaysay. In winning the election, Marcos achieved the political distinction of being the first President of the Republic to be re-elected. Marcos said,
"When in the presidential elections of 1969, I broke a long tradition which denied any president a second term, I won by an unprecedented majority of two million votes, eighty-eight million voting, on a platform of nationalism, reform and performance."
